No-Refrigeration Camping Peanut Butter Wraps for the Campfire
I love the smell of a campfire mixing with toasted tortillas. These peanut butter wraps are my go-to for a no-fuss lunch that doesn't need a cooler. The trick is a warm, slightly crisp exterior and a cool, creamy interior—no refrigeration required.

Here's the method: assemble at home, wrap in foil, and heat over coals at camp. The peanut butter stays stable, the banana adds sweetness, and the honey brings a touch of stickiness that caramelizes against the tortilla. No fridge, no worry.
Why No Refrigeration Works
Peanut butter is shelf-stable—it doesn't need cold. Bananas are fine at room temperature for a day, especially when whole. The key is the ratio: keep the filling dry enough that the tortilla doesn't get soggy. I use exactly 2 tablespoons of peanut butter per wrap, spread edge to edge. That layer seals the tortilla from moisture. Bananas go on top, not mixed in. Honey is thin, so just a drizzle—1/2 tablespoon per wrap. Too much liquid and the wrap turns to mush.
For food safety: if the temperature is above 90°F, keep wraps shaded in your pack. Below that, they're fine for 6 hours. I've kept them in a dry pack for a full morning hike and they were perfect at lunch.
Assembly Method
Start with a clean surface. Lay a tortilla flat. Use the back of a spoon to spread peanut butter evenly, leaving a 1/2-inch border. This border helps the wrap seal when rolled. Arrange banana slices in a single layer—no overlapping. Overlap traps moisture and creates a wet spot. Drizzle honey, then a pinch of cinnamon if you like warmth.
Now the roll: fold the left and right edges inward about an inch. Then roll from the bottom, snug but not tight. You want the tortilla to hold without tearing. Press the seam gently to seal. Place seam-side down on a 12-inch square of heavy-duty foil. Fold the foil over, crimp the edges into a tight packet. Double-wrap if you're worried about ash or if the fire is hot.
I make four wraps at a time, stack them in a ziplock bag, and they travel flat in my pack.
