No Refrigeration Camping Nut Butter Packs: Simple Trail Eats

By Ethan Carter · Page 2 of 3

How to Pack for the Trail

I use small reusable silicone bags (2-ounce size) or beeswax wraps. For silicone bags, spoon the mixture in, press out air, and seal. For wraps, place a spoonful in the center, fold the sides over, then roll tightly and secure with a twist tie. The packs should be flat — about 1/4 inch thick — so they stack easily and warm evenly in your hand.

Do not refrigerate these packs. They are designed for ambient storage. Keep them in a dry, shaded spot inside your pack — away from direct sun and heat sources. If temperatures exceed 85°F, the coconut oil may soften, and the pack can become runny. In that case, store them in a small insulated pouch or near the bottom of your pack where it is cooler. If the pack does soften, just stir it with a spoon before eating.

Adapting for Special Diets

For nut-free, use sunflower seed butter. Note that sunflower seed butter can turn a slight green color when mixed with alkaline ingredients (like baking soda, which is not in this recipe) — that is a natural reaction and safe. For keto, omit the maple syrup or honey entirely. For vegan, use maple syrup or agave instead of honey. Always check labels for cross-contamination if serving someone with severe allergies.

For a lower-calorie option, replace half the almond butter with pumpkin seed butter. The texture will be slightly grainier, so add an extra teaspoon of coconut oil to compensate.

Food Safety on the Trail

These packs are not perishable because they contain no water-rich ingredients. However, if you add any fresh fruit (like mashed banana) or yogurt, the pack becomes perishable and requires refrigeration. Keep this recipe dry. If the pack develops an off smell, mold, or unusual color (beyond the green tint from sunflower seeds), discard it. When in doubt, throw it out.

For longer trips (over 5 days), consider vacuum-sealing the packs. This removes oxygen and extends shelf life by reducing oxidation of the nut oils. Without vacuum sealing, use within 5 days at moderate temperatures.
