Make-Ahead Kids Camping Themed Cupcakes

By Ethan Carter · Page 1 of 3

The smell of a campfire mingles with the sweet scent of vanilla and toasted sugar. That's the magic of these camping themed cupcakes—they bring the campsite to your table, even before you pack the tent. I've learned that making desserts ahead for a camping trip saves time and stress, so you can focus on the fun. These cupcakes are sturdy enough to travel, easy to decorate with kids, and taste like a mini s'more in every bite.

Step-by-step: piping buttercream frosting onto a cooled vanilla cupcake.

Why Make-Ahead Cupcakes Work for Camping

The key to successful make-ahead camping desserts is texture. Cupcakes stay moist for days when stored properly, and the frosting acts as a seal. I keep the ratio of butter to sugar in my frosting at 1:6 (one part butter to six parts powdered sugar by weight) for a stable, pipeable consistency that doesn't melt in warm weather. This ratio gives you a frosting that holds its shape without being overly sweet. A common mistake is making the frosting too soft—it will slide off during transport. If your frosting seems runny, add a tablespoon of powdered sugar at a time until it firms up.

Choosing Your Cupcake Base

Vanilla is my go-to because it pairs with everything, but chocolate or lemon work too. The important part is the crumb: a tight, even crumb holds up better than a fluffy, airy one. To achieve this, I use the reverse creaming method: mix the dry ingredients with the butter first, then add the wet ingredients. This coats the flour in fat, reducing gluten formation and creating a tender, sturdy cupcake. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for exactly 18-20 minutes—overbaking dries them out, and underbaking makes them fragile. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean with a few moist crumbs.
