5-Ingredient Grilled Camping Flank Steak Done Right

By Ethan Carter ยท Page 1 of 3

The first sound you hear at a campsite dinner is the sizzle of meat hitting hot metal. That crackle, the thin line of smoke rising into the dusk air โ€” it signals something good coming. A grilled flank steak does that better than almost anything else. It cooks fast, takes a simple marinade, and slices into tender, juicy pieces that feel like a real meal after a day outdoors.

This version uses just five ingredients you can pack easily: olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar, and pepper. No complicated rubs, no long lists. The key is the ratio โ€” I keep the marinade at 4 parts oil to 3 parts soy sauce to 1 part brown sugar. That balance gives you enough salt and sweetness to form a crust without burning over the fire.

Why Flank Steak Works for Camping

Flank steak is lean, cooks quickly, and doesn't need hours in a marinade. Thirty minutes is plenty โ€” any longer and the acid in the soy sauce can start to break down the meat fibers too much, making it mushy. At the campsite, that's a real advantage. You can prep the marinade at home, toss the steak in a bag, and keep it in the cooler. By the time you've set up camp and let the fire burn down to coals, it's ready to go.

The thin, flat shape of flank steak also means it fits perfectly on a camp grill grate or in a cast iron skillet. No awkward curling edges. And because it's about an inch thick, you get a nice sear on the outside while the inside stays pink.
